All About Wastewater Treatment

This short article is about the treatment of wastewater. Wastewater treatment describes the process used to convert wastewater or sewage, water that has been used in some form of process and has become contaminated making it unsuitable for further use, or water that is no longer required into an effluent that can be either returned safely to the water cycle with minimal environmental issues or reused for either industrial or domestic consumption.

Water Harvesting & Water Reclamation

The treatment of wastewater for subsequent reuse is often referred to as water harvesting or water reclamation and involves the avoidance of wastewater discharge by use of treated wastewater effluent for various purposes.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

The treatment of wastewater typically involves removing impurities from the water being treated; and some methods of treatment are applicable to both water and wastewater. The physical infrastructure used for the treatment of wastewater streams is usually referred to as a wastewater treatment plant or WTP.

The treatment of municipal wastewater is typically incorporated in to the field associated with Environmental Public Works, which incorporates the management of human waste, sewage treatment, solid waste, storm-water management, and industrial and process water treatment.

Waste Water Bye-Products

Typically the other bye-products from a wastewater treatment plant, including screenings, grit and sewage sludge may also be treated in a wastewater treatment plant.

If the wastewater is primarily from domestic and small/light industrial sources (municipal sources) it is usually referred to as sewage and its treatment is called sewage treatment.
