Trade Effluent & Industrial Wastewater Treatment

In the UK if your business generates wastewater as part of its operations it is typically referred to as industrial wastewater or trade effluent and must be dealt in accordance with specific rules and regulations set by the local sewerage undertaker.

As a responsible business it is incredibly important that you treat this wastewater in the best possible way. It’s not just a matter of making sure you deal with it effectively, it is also required under the law.

Discharging Trade Effluent

Treating trade effluent or industrial wastewater in the proper manner can save your business lots of money and also help minimise your impact on the environment.

You have three basic options to choose from when discharging trade effluent:

  • Discharging to surface waters.
  • Discharging to sewers.
  • Discharging to your own company wastewater treatment plant.

The first of these options requires your business to apply and be accepted for a consent to discharge notice.

The second option ensures the waste water your business discharges is sent to the sewers to be treated in a sewage works in your local area.

However even in this situation you will have to stay within set limits in order to avoid being penalised.

The final option is to create your own wastewater treatment plant on-site, to ensure the water is properly treated so it can either be reused or discharged without penalty.
