PD 855468:2015 – Flushing & Disinfection of Domestic Water Services
The British Standards document PD 855468:2015 – Guide to the flushing and disinfection of services supplying water for domestic use within buildings and their curtilages was published by the British Standards Institution in September 2015.
PD 855468:2015 provides guidance on water supply systems including the cleaning, flushing and disinfecting of domestic water systems to control microbiological growth and remove unwanted debris.
PD 855468:2015 – Guide to Flushing & Disinfection
Many of the details and engineering procedures now included in PD 855468:2015 were originally dealt with in BS 8558:2011, but have been enhanced to offer improved guidance for water treatment companies, building services engineers, plumbing contractors and public health professionals.
Flushing & Disinfection of Domestic Water Services
Procedures for flushing and disinfection were previously included in BS 8558:2011 (Guide to the design, installation, testing and maintenance of services supplying water for domestic use within buildings and their curtilages), but have been expanded and are now included in PD 855468:2015, which includes guidance on the following:
- Deploying the correct tools and personnel for cleaning, flushing and disinfecting operations.
- Selecting and using appropriate disinfectants and processes.
- How to respond if a microbiological problem is identified.
- Effective record keeping for cleaning activities.
Supply, Storage & Distribution of Water
PD 855468:2015 applies to water systems for the supply, storage and distribution of water for domestic purposes within buildings and their curtilages. It includes water used to make food, but excludes closed systems and other industrial processes.
PD 855468:2015 provides guidance to water treatment companies, building services engineers, plumbers and other engineering and health professionals whether they are involved with the preparation of new water systems, or maintaining or altering existing systems.
Maintaining Good Water Quality Standards
The guidance helps contractors achieve high water quality and minimise the risks associated with system corrosion, biofouling, water contamination and water system damage.
PD 855468:2015 – Guide to the flushing and disinfection of services supplying water for domestic use within buildings and their curtilages is especially useful for water treatment companies, building services engineers, plumbing contractors and public health professionals.
