What the Health & Safety Executive say about legionella training
The UK’s Health & Safety Executive have long established that one of the main factors in outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease (a severe pneumonia like chest infection) is a lack of training and awareness of employers, their staff and other operators.
To improve the quality of your Legionnaires’ disease risk management procedures anyone with responsibility for the management of the control of legionella should receive suitable training to ensure they are competent to carry out the work they are assigned to do.
Is legionella training required by law?
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a general duty on all employers to provide suitable training to ensure the safety and health of their employees in the workplace.
The Health and Safety Executive deal with the requirement for legionella training more specifically in their Approved Code of Practice ACOP L8 “Legionnaires’ disease: The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems”.
They state that it is important that anyone involved in managing and controlling legionella must be properly trained to a standard that ensures tasks are performed in a safe and technically competent manner.
The HSE also recommend that regular auditing and refresher training be carried out to ensure people’s skills are kept up to date.
