What is chlorine dioxide?

Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is a gas and acts as a powerful disinfectant commonly used in the treatment of water, wastewater and industrial processes. It will kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms, and is highly effective against biofilm. It is a strong oxidising agent, effective across a wide pH range and is commonly used in drinking water, wastewater, cooling towers, and processes where effective sanitisation is safety critical.

Why is chlorine dioxide so effective?

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful, rapid acting biocide, disinfectant and sanitiser that is highly effective at concentrations as low as 0.1 ppm. It works over a wide pH range under both hard and soft water conditions and does not form toxic disinfection by-products (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes (THMs). It will also eliminate both planktonic and sessile bacteria in water; it rapidly sanitises hard surfaces and is ideal for in use in odour control applications.

Additionally chlorine dioxide is highly effective when used to control Legionella bacteria and so prevent Legionnaires’ disease. It also rapidly penetrates and destroys problematic biofilm that often colonise water systems, and importantly it inhibits its re-growth.

The use of chlorine dioxide in the disinfection, purification and treatment of water in facilities management and building services installations is becoming increasingly popular primarily because of its unique combination of powerful properties. These properties make it ideal for use in a wide range of water sterilisation, disinfection, environmental hygiene, industrial and process water and effluent treatment activities.

Chlorine dioxide is a powerful biocide, disinfectant and sanitiser

Chlorine dioxide is an incredibly powerful biocide, disinfectant and sanitiser that is effective against many waterborne pathogens including bacteria, viruses and protozoa at concentrations as low as 0.1 ppm to 0.5 ppm.

Organisms include Legionella bacteria, E.coli, Coliforms, Pseudomonas, Cryptosporidium, Giardia Cysts, Algae and Amoebae.

Rapid acting biocide

It rapidly disinfects and sanitises contaminated water and hard surfaces in only seconds. Other biocides and disinfectants can take much longer to work.

Effective against Legionella bacteria

Chlorine dioxide is highly effective when used to control Legionella bacteria and so prevent Legionnaires’ disease. It’s suitable for applications such as hot and cold water systems, cooling towers and cooling water systems, hot tubs and spa pools, decorative fountains and water features.

Health & Safety Executive

It is specifically identified by the Health & Safety Executive in their ACOP L8 for use in the control of Legionella bacteria in water systems, at concentrations above 0.1ppm.

Effective against biofilm

Chlorine dioxide will eliminate both planktonic (free swimming) and sessile (biofilm) bacteria in water. It acts to rapidly penetrate and destroy biofilm that can colonise water systems, it then inhibits its re-growth.

This is particularly important in controlling and removing legionella, pseudomonas and other slime forming bacteria which can contaminate and cause significant water quality, safety and biofouling issues in hot and cold water systems, hot tubs, cooling towers and on heat transfer surfaces.

Drinking Water Inspectorate

Chlorine dioxide is approved by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) for use in drinking water applications at levels <0.5 ppm total oxidant (chlorine dioxide + chlorate + chlorite).

pH compatibility

It works well over a wide pH range, between pH 4 and 10 under both hard and soft water conditions, unlike chlorine and bromine both of which suffer a drop in potency as pH levels increase.

Eliminates taste and odour issues

Chlorine dioxide is ideal for use in the purification of drinking water and water used in food and beverage production processes as it results in no unwanted taste or odour issues, unlike chlorine. This is because chlorine dioxide does not form chloramines and other halogenated disinfection by-products (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes (THMs) as part of its disinfection action.

Where can chlorine dioxide be used?

Delivering a highly effective, fast acting disinfectant and biocide, our engineered chlorine dioxide water treatment and disinfection solutions can be successfully used across a wide range of industrial, commercial, manufacturing and process applications including:

  • Continuous mains water treatment

Ideal for the continuous treatment of mains water.
