All About Industrial Cooling Towers

This short article is about industrial cooling towers and cooling systems used in industrial and large scale process applications. The cooling towers used in industrial and process applications are typically used to remove heat from processes involving heat generation, machinery or materials that have been heated and then require cooling.

Industrial Cooling Towers

The large industrial cooling towers most people recognise as a cooling tower are mainly used to remove the heat from re-circulating cooling water systems used in power stations, petrochemical plants, refineries, natural gas processing plants, food and beverage processing, and in other industrial facilities.

Heat Transfer by Dissipation

A cooling tower works by dissipating unwanted heat to the atmosphere. This is a far more effective cooling technique than using just water. The water from evaporative cooling processes cannot be re-used but surface-only cooling water can be under certain circumstances.

Once-Through Sea Water Cooling

Although cooling towers are commonly used in large industrial, process and power generation facilities, it is not uncommon to find nuclear and coal-fired power stations that are located close to the sea to use of once-through sea water systems as their primary source of cooling.

Petroleum refineries and natural gas processing plants also tend to use large cooling tower systems.
